Reason #15

The University of North Carolina Men's Basketball Team is one of the most solid and consistent programs in the history of sports. The Winning Percentage, Championships, and the amount of players that went on to have fantastic careers in the NBA are off the charts.  But, the roots of this program are so deeply sewn that it effects even unthought of circumstances.
"A Coach's Life" by, Dean Smith
Pg. 285..... At the  bottom paragraph Dean Smith himself states

"I am absolutely convinced that I could have been just as happy in my career coaching a Division 3 school- no athletic scholarships, no TV coverage, no big buildings, no huge crowds. To form a team we'd POST A MESSAGE on a bulletin board: basketball TRY-OUTS today, all interested should be in the GYM no later then 3pm. Prepared to practice."

Therefore, the foundation allowed the University of North Carolina to have a strong men's and women's team.  Its a good thing, because well-known Track and Field athlete Marion Jones played basketball for the University of North Carolina.

She went on to have an unbelievable track and field career, The world melted every time we took a glimpse at that smile you see above.  Then the inevitable. ADVERSITY.

She admitted to taking performance enhancing drugs, and was forced to give back all 5 of the gold medals that she won at the Sydney Olympics, she also spent time in prison.
Upon her release from prison, the fact that she chose to attend a college in which she could play basketball and run track, became a decision that allowed her to land on her feet.  And, there we see it again the smile that melted the hearts of so many.  When sports programs are given the resources to be properly run, the lessons and possibilities are infinite.  Be the company in which allows that to happen, Marion Jones is just one of many.............gym44
